PS5, PS5 pro, PS Portal… Sony confirms a global price increase, here are the new prices

The news has broken and it risks making people cringe. Sony has formalized a price increase for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and PlayStation Portal. This increase will be effective from April 2, 2026 in several regions of the world, including Europe and the United States.

Behind this decision, Sony Interactive Entertainment cites a difficult economic context. Isabelle Tomatis explains: “Faced with persistent pressures from the global economic context, we have made the decision to increase the prices of the PS5, the PS5 Pro and the PlayStation Portal remote player worldwide.” A justification that fits into a global climate marked by inflation and rising technological costs.

What are the new prices for PS5 consoles in 2026

From April 2, 2026, players will have to deal with increased prices. In Europe, the PlayStation 5 goes to 649.99 euros, while the Digital version reaches 599.99 euros. The PlayStation 5 Pro reaches a symbolic milestone by selling at 899.99 euros.

This increase is not trivial. Since its launch in November 2020 at $500, the console has gradually seen its price rise. Today, the difference reaches an additional 100 dollars for the standard models and up to 150 dollars for the Pro version.

The PlayStation Portal follows the same trend with a price now set at 249.99 euros. A generalized increase that affects the entire PlayStation ecosystem.

Sony justifies this increase by the global economic context

To justify this decision, Sony highlights several factors. Global inflation, rising production costs and stress on certain electronic components play a determining role.

Isabelle Tomatis also specifies: “We are aware of the impact of price variations on our community and, after careful consideration, we have concluded that this measure is necessary to continue to offer innovative and high-quality gaming experiences to players around the world.”

At the same time, other market players are following a similar trajectory. Microsoft and Nintendo have also adjusted their prices recently, a sign that the entire industry is facing the same constraints.

Is video gaming becoming an increasingly expensive leisure activity?

This increase raises a sensitive issue among players. Are video games becoming a leisure activity reserved for a wealthier part of the public?

According to Mat Piscatella, the trend is already visible: “A larger share of the market is captured by wealthier consumers with higher incomes, and low-income segments are experiencing real difficulties.” He adds: “Premium video games rely more and more on wealthy consumers.”

Between the price of consoles, that of games and subscriptions, the overall bill continues to climb. And with highly anticipated releases like GTA 6 on the horizon, this dynamic could further increase in the months to come.
