December is not always a good month for subscription services, but Sony intends to shake up this habit. The Japanese giant has just confirmed the arrival of a highly anticipated independent game, Skate Storyin the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalog. Developed solo by Sam Eng and edited by Devolver Digitalthis atypical title will be available upon its release, on December 8, 2025on PS5. It will accompany the native PS5 version of Red Dead Redemptionplanned for December 2in the news of the month.
At first glance, Skate Story could pass for yet another skateboard game. But make no mistake: this is a video game UFO halfway between action game, RPG and sensory experience. The player plays an atypical creature in a quest straight out of a psychedelic dream. “You play a demon from Hell, charged by the Devil with devouring the moon to regain his freedom.” This is the pitch as strange as it is fascinating revealed by Sony.
A skateboard game… in Hell
The gameplay revolves around skateboard tricksofsupernatural exploration and of boss fightsall in a captivating artistic direction. With more than 70 tricks to master, a psychedelic soundtrack signed Blood Cultures and surreal environments, Skate Story clearly aims to stand out from the crowd. For a specialist journalist like Chris Carter, the enthusiasm is palpable: “The concept is really brilliant: learning basic tricks while going through the nine levels of the Underworld makes me want to play it from day one.”
Another striking element: the visual storytelling. The main character is not just a skateboarder. “Skate Story tells the story of a demon made of glass and pain, who must traverse the nine circles of Hell on his magic skateboard.” A universe as poetic as it is distressing, populated by strange creatures, giant philosophical heads and existential dialogues, in which each jump or grind becomes a step towards freedom.
PS Plus Extra is banking on surprises for the end of the year
Sony is changing its strategy for the end of 2025: instead of announcing all of its games at once, the brand reveals its surprises little by little, often via spontaneous announcements or during one-off events. This is exactly what happened here, with a official confirmation on the PlayStation Blog relayed by Devolver Digital. A strategy of suspense which seems to be bearing fruit, as the reactions to the announcement of Skate Story are enthusiastic.
To enjoy the game, you will need to be a subscriber to PS Plus Extra or Premium, the plans giving access to the extended catalog. Those who do not have PS5 will be able to turn to the versions PC Or Switch2also expected on December 8.
“Between acrobatics, trick-based boss fights, offbeat humor and a visually captivating aesthetic, Skate Story could well be the independent revelation of the end of the year.” A daring artistic and editorial bet for Sony, which hopes to conclude 2025 with panache.
