New »Sword Art Online« film announced for 2028 + teaser


The official X account for the anime adaptation of “Sword Art Online” revealed today the first details about the upcoming original film, which was originally announced in November 2022. We summarize.

Start planned for 2028

The film is titled “Sword Art Online the Movie: Integral Domain” and is expected to be released in Japanese cinemas sometime in 2028. You can find a first teaser and a visual further down in this article.

A-1 Pictures and Psyde Kick Studio are responsible for the production of the film, which tells a new story by series creator Reki Kawahara and is set after “Alicization”. Shingo Adachi (“Lycoris Recoil”) directs, while Yumiko Yamamoto creates the character design.

The main roles of the Japanese voice cast again include Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kirito and Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna. Further details are still pending. As usual, we will keep you updated.

The anime adaptation of “Sword Art Online” currently includes four series seasons, the original film “Ordinal Scale” and two “Progressive” films. Another film titled “Unanswered//butterfly: Sword Art Online” will be released on July 10, 2026 along with the video game “Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad”.
