Nintendo announces the arrival of a free cult game on Switch 2

Some birthdays go unnoticed. That of Pokémon is shaking the entire industry. Thirty years after its debut, the Nintendo franchise continues to make announcements and shows no signs of slowing down. And among the surprises revealed recently, an unexpected return particularly attracts the attention of nostalgic players.

Nintendo Switch Online will welcome an episode that has long been stuck on GameCube. Pokémon XD: Breath of Darkness will arrive in the retro collection in March. But this availability hides an important restriction: not all players will be able to benefit from it.

Pokémon XD, an unexpected return twenty years after the GameCube

Originally released on November 17, 2005 on GameCube, Pokémon XD: Breath of Darkness belongs to a particular branch of the saga. Unlike traditional installments on Game Boy or Nintendo DS, it offered an experience focused on dual battles and purifying obscure Pokémon.

Developed by Genius Sonority and published by Nintendo, the title was a direct continuation of Pokémon Colosseum. It took its desert universe and its atypical capture system, while enriching it.

The announcement of its integration into the Nintendo Switch Online catalog marks a new stage in the Japanese manufacturer’s retro strategy, which is increasing the number of additions from older generations.

Why this game won’t be accessible to everyone

The essential information concerns the conditions of access. Since Pokémon XD is a GameCube game, it will not be available on the standard Nintendo Switch. Its arrival is planned exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. In addition, access will be reserved for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.

Nintendo has not yet communicated a specific date for March, nor detailed whether a specific subscription will be required. This choice reinforces the premium dimension of the GameCube retro catalog, which is gradually establishing itself as a strong argument for the new console.

A more ambitious experience than Pokémon Colosseum

If Pokémon XD shares the DNA of Pokémon Colosseum, it goes beyond its basics on several points. The region explored is larger and the list of dark Pokémon to purify is larger. The addition of Poké-Places allows you to capture wild Pokémon, a mechanic absent from its predecessor.

Its lifespan is denser, with more secondary content and more extensive progression. This positioning makes it one of the most popular spin-off episodes of the GameCube era. At this stage, Pokémon Colosseum has not been made official on Nintendo Switch Online, even if its return seems logical in the medium term.

30 years of Pokémon and Nintendo’s retro strategy

The arrival of Pokémon XD is not random. It takes place in a particularly busy anniversary context. During a conference dedicated to the thirty years of the license, Nintendo made numerous announcements: new cards, derivative products, information on future Switch 2 games and the return of cult titles like Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.

The promotion of a GameCube episode reinforces this heritage logic. Nintendo capitalizes on nostalgia while promoting the Switch 2 as an essential platform for accessing these classics. It now remains to be seen the exact day of availability in March and whether other GameCube titles will follow in the coming months.
