New record: Global anime market will grow strongly in 2024

The Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) recently announced that the anime market has reached a new record level in 2024. We summarize.

New record high

According to the preliminary report, the total market value last year was 3.84 trillion yen (around 21.5 billion euros). Of this, 1.67 trillion yen came from the Japanese market and 2.17 trillion yen from the international market.

Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to growth of 14.8%, which was driven primarily by strong growth abroad – a full 26%. The domestic market, on the other hand, grew by 2.8%.

Revenue from anime production also reached a new all-time high, rising 9.1% to 466.2 billion yen (about 2.61 billion euros). Of this, Japan accounted for 347.4 billion yen, an increase of 6.7%, while foreign sales increased by 16.6% to 118.8 billion yen.

In this context, it should be mentioned that the AJA does not evaluate the global anime market solely based on sales from TV, cinema, home video and streaming, but also includes revenue from merchandising, music, concerts, various events, international licenses and other sources. The full industry report is scheduled to be published in early December 2025.
