The origin of Judas
Ken Levine focuses today on the main character of Judaswhich has the same name. This is a protagonist who struggles to understand humans, and who feels much more at ease with machines:
“ This is his greatest strength, but also his greatest weakness. We placed her in a science fiction world, aboard a colony ship populated by robots, a futuristic environment that makes a person like her extremely powerful. But it’s also a world where your success depends on your ability to follow the rules: disobeying orders often results in mission failure. This makes her an outlaw, an outcast, a Judas. This tension, at the heart of the character, shaped the entire game, which we stopped considering as a simple FPS and began to qualify as a “Judas simulator”. The entire game relies on the main idea that you interact with the world as Judas. »
Drew Mitchell, Lead Narrative Designer, explains that Judas is a character with a little more connection to the story and the world of the game than were Booker and Jack, who arrived elsewhere:
“ She is at the center of the events that trigger the game’s story. She has a past with this world and its inhabitants, most often very negative. Its story is much more complicated than simply leaving a sinking ship, and offers the player many ways to determine how their adventure will unfold. It’s always risky to give the player control of an already well-defined and very expressive character. There’s a fear of dissonance between the player and the game, so it was great to see playtesters stop and ask themselves, “What would Judas do in this situation?” How would she react? » This shows that they are engaging with the character and taking her and her adventure seriously. »
But as in the BioShockthe framework of your adventure will also be the backbone of Judas. You will travel here on the Mayflower, a ship that has been traveling for several decadeswhich therefore has a long history, with internal power relations which have evolved. A micro-civilization in short, which has seen several generations pass, which will be important in the relationships you will have with the characters.
