While the release of GTA VI still seems far away, an unexpected alternative comes to capture the players’ attention. A free remaster of GTA IVcurrently in development on PC, brings new life to Liberty City with breathtaking modern graphics. Worn by the modder xoxor4dthis project is based on technology RTX Remix from NVIDIA to visually transform one of the most cult opus of the saga.
“It may be a while before we can play GTA VI, but this GTA IV remaster could just be the solution to keep us waiting until then,” perfectly sums up the context of this unexpected return. With Niko Bellic featured and rendered close to current standards, this mod puts GTA IV back in the spotlight.
A photorealistic rendering thanks to Path Tracing
Although GTA IV has aged quite wellthe mod gives a whole new face to the game thanks to integration of real-time Path Tracing. This technology offers a complete overhaul of lighting, shadows and reflections in the game. “This mod completely renews the look of GTA IV with modern graphics,” reads the original article.
In an already viral demonstration video, we see Niko Bellic slowly strolling through the streets of Liberty City. Realistic reflections in windows, dynamic shadowsAnd light effects stunning effects transform the urban atmosphere of the game. Everything fits perfectly into the original environment, retaining the aesthetic of GTA IV while modernizing it.
“This mod adds real-time Path Tracing to the game, completely rethinking every aspect, from reflections to lighting,” the source site further specifies. And the most surprising thing is that this remaster will remain completely free when it was released.
No date or official version from Rockstar yet
If the enthusiasm is great, one question persists: when can we play it? For the moment, “no release date has been announced for the mod”, even if the contributors of the xoxor4d’s Patreon can test an alpha version in advance. In the absence of a timetable, the project remains reserved for the most impatient people willing to support its creator.
And on the official side? Nothing moves either. “As for whether GTA IV will get an official remaster by Rockstar Games, nothing has been confirmed yet.” Since the controversial launch of the remastered trilogy in 3D, the publisher seems to be moving cautiously on its old titles. Focused on GTA VI, Rockstar could well wait for a calmer period before formalizing a return of GTA IV on current consoles.
In the meantime, this free remaster stands out as the best excuse to rediscover Liberty Cityall in ultra high-end version. A great way to wait before hitting the streets of Vice City in GTA VI.
