When it was released in March 2022, Gran Turismo 7 did not receive the reception hoped for. The latest addition to the legendary saga had everything to please on paper, but progression deemed too punitive and frustrating mechanics quickly tarnished the image of the game. Criticisms were rife, particularly on the time needed to unlock certain cars or the online bugs.
For Polyphony Digital, we had to react quickly. And that’s what the Japanese studio did by launching a series of monthly updates to correct the flaws pointed out by the community. Three years later, Gran Turismo 7 returns to the spotlight with what promises to be its most ambitious patch yet.
The Spec 3 patch: eight free cars and two cult circuits
Scheduled for December 4, 2025, the Spec 3 update promises to give a boost to the players’ garage. Eight cars will be added to the fleet, several of which have been long awaited. “A car that has been requested for 20 years, the Renault Espace F1, new circuits, new introductory cinematics, Scapes, menus and weekly challenges… in short, it will have some under the hood.”
The 1995 Renault Espace F1 is accompanied by other prestigious or iconic models:
- Ferrari 296 GT3 (2022)
- Gran Turismo F3500-B
- Mine’s Skyline (R34) GT-R
- Mitsubishi FTO GP Version R Aero (1998)
- Polestar 5 Performance (2025)
- Renault Espace F1 (1995)
- FIAT Panda (subject to availability)
- Ferrari 296 GTB or GTS (subject to availability)
“Faithful to his tradition, Kaz Yamauchi revealed his usual monthly teaser image, reminding us that the December 2025 update of Gran Turismo 7 will include eight new free cars, as if such a figure was forgotten.”
More than cars: features that enrich the game
But this patch doesn’t stop there. It also introduces several new features which demonstrate the desire to make the game richer, more accessible, and more immersive:
- New intro cinematics
- New Scapes for photography
- Weekly challenges and new menus
- Improved data logger
- Dunlop tires added
- Raised level cap for collectors
A strategic shift as the holidays approach
Polyphony Digital doesn’t stop with these gifts. At the same time, a Paid DLC called Power Pack will complete the offer for the most invested players. The combination of substantial free content and an optional pack shows a change in the studio’s strategy, more balanced and respectful of its fan base.
By offering so much at no extra cost just before Christmas, Gran Turismo 7 sends a strong message: that of a game that has come a long way, and is determined to regain its place on the top ranking of racing games.
