Grand Theft Auto IV fans can finally rediscover Liberty City like never before. The highly anticipated RTX Remix mod, designed by modder xoxor4d, is now available for free download. This impressive project adds path tracing rendering to the original game, delivering real-time light, shadow, and reflection effects.
Result: the emblematic city inspired by New York gains in depth, in contrast, and above all in modernity, without losing any of its grimy urban patina. The mod truly transforms the experience, taking this 2008 classic into a new graphical era.
What RTX Remix actually changes in GTA IV
RTX Remix is a tool developed by NVIDIA to allow modders to easily upgrade older games to DirectX 8 or 9. In the case of GTA IV, this results in a complete overhaul of dynamic lighting using path tracing.
The exterior environments become particularly realistic: the street lamps project a softer light, the puddles reflect the neon lights, and the interiors plunge into striking shadow plays. The basic engine of the game, certainly dated, is sublimated. No change in gameplay, but increased visual immersion.
The mod installation, offered with instructions included, is accessible via NexusMods. All you need to do is own the original PC version of GTA IV to enjoy it at no cost.
Is Rockstar (finally) working on an official remaster?
For several years, rumors of an official remaster of GTA IV have come up regularly. Last May, insider Tez2 indicated that the project could have been in the works at Rockstar for about a year, with a possible release in late 2025 or early 2026.
Disturbing clues have sowed doubt: a reference to the PS4 briefly appeared on Rockstar’s support site, suggesting a modernized version of the game. But the publisher has, to date, not officially confirmed anything.
With the release of GTA VI scheduled for November 2026, a remaster of GTA IV early next year could serve as a strategic interim step for fans in need.
A perfect way to wait until GTA VI
While awaiting a formal announcement from Rockstar, this unofficial remaster offers a golden opportunity to rediscover one of the darkest and most realistic stories in the saga. GTA IV remains a cult episode to this day, driven by the narration of Niko Bellic, and its return in RTX version is timely.
PC gamers now have a free, powerful and spectacular alternative. With a few technical adjustments, Liberty City becomes more alive than ever. And even if Rockstar is slow to move, modders continue to push the limits.
