Elden Ring adds a challenging new free game mode that could shake up your experience

With Elden Ring, FromSoftware has already set the bar very high in terms of difficulty. However, some players swear by voluntary suffering and are constantly looking for a way to make the Underworld even more merciless.

Good news for them: a new free “game mode” is coming in the form of the mod Rune Healthsigned by the creator Future and available on Nexus Mods. By completely replacing the Stamina system with hit points dictated by your runes, it turns every death, every purchase, and every level up into a high-risk decision.

Elden Ring: can this new free mode really change everything?

Concretely, Rune Health erases the classic system where your Vigor determines your max HP. All characters start with 1 hit point at 0 runes, then gain 1 additional HP for every 100 runes carried. A telling example: with 71,700 runes on you, the mod calculates 718 PV, including the basic life point offered for free.

The “standard” version sets a ceiling of 100,000 runes, or 1,000 VP possible via this system, excluding buffs and equipment. A variation removes this cap completely and leaves the formula configurable in a simple text file reloaded on the fly. On his page Nexus Mods, Future sums up the idea with a shocking sentence: “ONLY THE RICH MAY LIVE!!! BWAHAHA”.

Rune Health: What’s happening to your way of playing Elden Ring?

Immediate result: the richer you are in runes, the more your life bar increases. But the coin has a brutal flip side. Each time you die, the runes you lose take a portion of your max HP with them. Investing in a level up, buying a spell or improving a weapon therefore amounts to voluntarily reducing your maximum health.

In an already unforgiving game, this mechanic transforms each farm zone and each boss into a permanent gamble. Fans of challenge runs will find there a perfect terrain for no-death, no-hit or level 1 games, where the slightest error can collapse a hard-won HP reserve.

The most masochistic can even combine it with Capitalism Modwhich makes each roll, attack or movement pay in runes. Moving to dodge a blow then amounts to indirectly reducing your future life bar, an economical survival mode perfect for content creators.

How to take advantage of this free Elden Ring mode on PC, and for whom?

Rune Health is already available for free download on Nexus Modsonly on PC. To install it, you have to go through a manager like Mod Engine 2 : you unzip the mod files in the provided folder, launch Elden Ring via the loader and play offline to avoid any problems with anti-cheat and official servers.

Remember to save your game files before any manipulation, and keep in mind that this “game mode” does not exist on PS5 or Xbox, the consoles do not accept this type of modification. Rune Health clearly aimed at Souls-like veterans and content creators; if you are already struggling in the base game, it is better to keep your runes to increase your Vigor quietly.
