Rare “Dragon Ball x McLaren” flag sold for top price

An autographed “Dragon Ball x McLaren” racing flag from the 90s achieved a remarkably high selling price at auction, even outstripping legendary racing suits. We summarize.

Maximum price for “Dragon Ball” flag

The extremely rare “Dragon Ball x McLaren” racing flag from 1990, which was even hand-signed by the now deceased “Dragon Ball” creator Akira Toriyama, achieved the highest price of the day in the F1 Authentics Season Launch Auction and changed hands for the equivalent of just under 69,000 euros (original: 60,000 GBP).

For comparison: On the same day, Lewis Hamilton’s 2011 McLaren racing suit was auctioned for the equivalent of around 57,000 euros and Michael Schumacher’s 2010 Mercedes AMG Petronas racing suit was auctioned for around 18,000 euros.

The flag, which you can see below as usual, shows some of the most famous characters from “Dragon Ball” alongside a McLaren-Honda MP4/5B with starting number 28 and is one of a limited edition of promotional items produced as part of a remarkable collaboration between “Dragon Ball” publisher Shueisha and the McLaren Formula 1 team.

From 1990 to 1992, Shueisha was also one of McLaren’s sponsors, especially due to Akira Toriyama’s great interest in motorsports and his enthusiasm for the then driver Ayrton Senna, which is why the Weekly Shonen Jump logo also adorned the snout of the racing cars.

The new owner of the flag was not named, but he has undoubtedly acquired a very special piece of “Dragon Ball” and F1 history.
