A cult trilogy from the PS2 era returns to the spotlight, this time on PC and with a serious technical facelift. Enough to tickle players who spent their adolescence on their PlayStation 2 to chain together the 3D platform boards.
Behind this resurrection lies the community project OpenGOALwhich offers PC versions of the Jak and Daxter saga. The last missing link, Jake 3has just arrived, completing a trilogy playable natively, in high definition and, above all, via a free launcher.
Jak and Daxter on PC: why is this PS2 trilogy causing so much talk?
Signed Naughty Dogthe series Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jack 2 And Jack 3 marked the PlayStation 2 between 2001 and 2004 with its mix of action, humor and open worlds, alongside Ratchet and Clank.
OpenGOAL recompile the house language Game Oriented Assembly Lisp of Naughty Dog to generate real x86 64 executables on Windows, Linux and macOS. As a result, the three games run like classic PC titles, without emulation, and are today “feature complete and fully completable”, recalls PC Gamer.
Jak and Daxter PC 4K 60 FPS: what concrete gains for gamers?
First visible novelty: the image. The ports accept 4K, wide or ultrawide screens and a stable framerate of 60 FPS, much more comfortable than on PS2. Modern graphics options allow you to adjust sharpness, viewing distance and effects.
In terms of comfort, more flexible camera, complete remapping of controls and a few accessibility settings change the situation. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is considered very stable, while Jack 2 And Jack 3 remain in beta but fully finishable, with a few minor bugs.
The modding community is already active: high definition textures, gameplay corrections, even total delusions, like this mod spotting Half Life in the first Jak and Daxter. Compared to the Jak and Daxter Collection on PS4 and PS5, frozen and without mods, these PC versions seem much more attractive.
Jak and Daxter free on PC: how to enjoy it legally and what future for the license?
OpenGOAL is free, but it does not provide any game files. To stay on point, you must have the original PS2 discs, then extract an ISO image of each title yourself. Downloading ready-made ROMs remains illegal, even if the launcher accepts them.
On the practical side, we install the launcher from the official site or Flathub, we tell it the location of its ISOs and the tool generates separate executables for Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jack 2 And Jack 3. These builds also run very well on Steam Deck.
Spin offs like Daxter Or Jack X are not yet supported, and Sony does not seem to be in a hurry to relaunch the license, beyond the paid collection. In the meantime, it is the fans who today offer the best way to find Jack and Daxter on PC.
