The PlayStation 6 has not yet been made official by Sony, but there is already a lot of talk about it. A report shared on Reddit citing an estimated price of $600 has sparked a lively debate among video game enthusiasts. The result: doubts about the relevance of a new generation of consoles in a rapidly changing market.
Between increasingly expensive components, slow adoption of current “Pro” versions and the rise of technologies such as AI or cloud gaming, players are wondering. Will the PS6 really arrive at the right time? And above all: at what price?
“I don’t understand why Sony and Microsoft are looking to launch new consoles. Current consoles are expensive and their prices keep increasing. Their “Pro” versions have the same problems. I don’t hear any concrete demand from developers or players for more power. I hear more of a demand for more games for the titles already available,” writes one user.
Rising components, falling expectations
The economic context also plays a key role. Inflation on components such as RAM, due in particular to the rise of artificial intelligence, makes the manufacture of affordable consoles more difficult.
“I expect it. Given the price of RAM and everything else, AI will continue to develop and drive up the cost of components. I know that Sony and Nintendo are primarily looking to sell consoles at a loss to compensate for these losses through game sales, but they can’t do miracles to reduce costs. So I think the price of the PS6 should be closer to that of the PS5 Pro,” said another user.
Between feverish waiting and hopes of longevity
For others, this future PS6 could be the opportunity to take a technological step forward, provided that it lasts over time. “This may be a controversial opinion, but I’m looking forward to the next generation of consoles. Why? They’re still releasing modern games on XB1/PS4. I almost bought the Xbox One 15 years,” says another player.
An uncertain generational transition
Behind these discussions lies a broader concern: is the console generation model still suitable? The mix of genres between PC and console, the ever-numerous cross-gen games, and Nintendo’s different strategy make the future unclear. Sony hasn’t confirmed anything yet. But between fear of delay, doubts about the price and impatience for real new features, the PS6 has not finished making people talk about it.
