Developed by the independent studio Kooky Kontent, The December Job presents itself as a first-person game focused on exploration and infiltration. You play as a burglar who ventures into a labyrinthine workshop in search of stolen gifts. But be careful: Santa is stalking you, and he’s not in the mood for chocolates.
Visually, the game proudly displays its retro inspiration: low-poly models, blurred textures, grainy atmosphere… it feels like being immersed in a relic from the late 90s. And that’s intentional: the game pays homage to the classics of the PS1 era while parodying their mechanics.
A short adventure, free and well received
The December Job does not aim to revolutionize the genre. “It’s a small indie game – and it has a pretty short lifespan, but it’s completely free.” An honest proposition, which seduces above all with its offbeat atmosphere and its creativity.
On Steam it currently gets 90% positive reviewswhich earned it a “Very Positive” rating – one of the best on the platform. The humor, the dialogues and the nods to Christmas seem to have won over the players. “A really fun game for a first experience. I loved the elf’s lines, an absolutely perfect mix of horror and humor.”
Player reactions: between shaky charm and unexpected addiction
Despite some admitted technical imperfections, the game seduces with its unique tone and freshness. “It’s a little wonky, but in a good way. It’s very charming. Keep it up!” And for a free game, the commitment is there. Some users even speak of a title that is “hard to put down”. “This game is really fun and even addictive.”
Playable on PC, but uncertain Steam Deck compatibility
The December Job is exclusively available on PC via Steam. For Steam Deck users, compatibility is listed as “unknown” by Valve. You will therefore have to test it for yourself, but the advantage here is that the game is free : no risk to try.
One thing is certain: if you like retro games, dark humor, and slightly twisted Christmas atmospheres, this independent title is well worth the detour.
