Remakes yes, but a remake of MGS 4 is no
Will we soon be entitled to new episodes of Metal Gear Solideven without Hideo Kojima, or will we have to settle for remakes? The producer Noriaki Okamura spoke about the future of the license at Real Sound (interview transcribed by Eurogamer), and we seem to understand that the decision has not yet been completely made :
“ Currently, I am thinking about my next project. With Metal Gear, I allowed a new audience to discover my work, and I want to continue on this path. However, we haven’t yet decided what we are going to create. There could be remakes, but we could also embark on new creations. The Metal Gear series is like a page in video game history: it extends from pixel art to cinematic expressions. This is why the method of remake and the way of creating the visual expression varies from project to project. We do not intend to apply the methodology developed for MGS Delta to all our projects, but we will choose the method most suitable for each one. »
The path of new remakes therefore seems to be the most logical to follow for Konami, you still need to know which episode to choose. Visibly, not Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Not because it would be less appreciated, or because it wouldn’t need a remake as much as the others, but because the game is quite unique in its design, with a “ special code » which would make it difficult to bring up to date :
“ The hardware of the time required some pretty special design to deliver 3D performance with the technology available at that time, and MGS4 also had some pretty special code… It would be very difficult to replicate today. »
Difficult, but perhaps not impossible. The publisher will perhaps look towards other episodes that are easier to rework, and we must see if a remastering of this opus via an inevitable Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 will suffice.
