Expedition 33 at the Game Awards

A lucid studio facing more consensual competition?

In an interview with Bloomberg, Team Cherry co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen said they might not make it to the Game Awards (which will take place on December 11 in Los Angeles), despite the five nominations of Hollow Knight: Silksong. When asked about their attendance at the ceremony, both creators hinted that they might stay in Australia to focus on ongoing development. “Maybe not.” We’re very busy,” William Pellen replied simply.

If they still win, would a video appearance be planned? Unlikely, according to Ari Gibson, who believes that Silksong has almost no chance of beating Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33which he considers “exceptional and widely accessible”. He contrasts this general public approach to that of Silksong which would be “on the razor’s edge”. In other words, a game that “appeals to some but irritates others”.

Waited for almost 7 years by fans of Hollow Knight, Hollow Knight: Silksong had the effect of a bomb upon its release, even managing to saturate the various online stores like Steam or the Nintendo eShop. Despite everything, it is true that the intense difficulty of the game has divided quite a few players. Furthermore, the success of Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 seems to be unanimous among the public who continue to praise it, several months after its release. A phenomenon that says a lot in an industry where we quickly move on to something else, as the releases come one after the other.

As a reminder, Hollow Knight: Silksong is nominated in five major categories:

  • Game of the year,
  • Best artistic direction,
  • Best soundtrack,
  • Best Indie Game,
  • Best action/adventure game.

Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 appears in all of these categories except Action/Adventure, a performance that had never previously been achieved in the history of the Game Awards. Remember that, according to the official rules, 90% of the votes come from the jury, made up of international media (including ActuGaming for France) and 10% from the public. We are therefore not immune to a reversal.

Apart from this resignation, the interview gives some details behind the scenes of development (beware of spoilers if you plan to read it). Team Cherry especially confirms working on a DLC for Silksongwhile also considering projects that would extend “beyond Hollow Knight” for the future.

Hollow Knight Silksong is available on PC (via Steam and GOG), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series (and on Xbox Game Pass), Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Do not hesitate to reread our test to find out more.
