“Those who push it are not the most human or creative”

A Better Hell

Asked about his new book “A Better Paradise” on “The Chris Evans Breakfast Show” on Virgin Radio, the former vice-president of Rockstar Games pulls no punches when talking about generative AI. On this occasion, he insisted that artificial intelligence, even in its most advanced form, will never be able to replace human creativity :

Those who try to define the future of humanity via AI are not the most human or the most creative…

For him, the problem does not come so much from the technology itself as from the motivations and profiles of those who disseminate it. He describes users as “not totally balanced”. According to him, AI is “like a combine harvester” of data, but it lacks what makes up the soul of a work.

Further away, he is pessimistic about the future of AI: “I think AI will end up eating itself”he explains, emphasizing that these technologies rely on content created by humans to generate new content. As the web becomes invaded by productions from AI models, they will end up cannibalizing each other by feeding themselves with artificial content to create other content.

However, Houser does not reject AI outright. In another interview with the show “Sunday Brunch”, he acknowledged that his own studio, Absurd Ventures, dabbles a little, but considers that many promises about its usefulness are excessive.

In the midst of debates on ethics and the place of generative artificial intelligence, two camps seem to be emerging. On the one hand, decision-makers see it as a way to save enormous amounts of resources; on the other, a part of the creative force which rejects altogether this tool intended for people devoid of creativity. Recently, the publisher Krafton showed its desire to rely heavily on this technology. In contrast, AdHoc Studio, the creators of the excellent Dispatchbelieves that AI is only a means of production useful only to those who lack creativity.

It should also be remembered that many studios consider AI as a simple assistance tool, in particular to produce placeholders or temporary voices before the intervention of professional actors. The whole question is therefore to know where to place the cursor, and whether this progressive acceptance does not risk opening the door to ever more abuses.
