Toei Animation launches 10-year global plan for massive expansion

Toei Animation has launched the first stage of a 10-year development plan aimed at transforming the Japanese-based company into a leading player on a global scale. We summarize the details.

Ambitious plans

The studio therefore aims not only to export anime from Japan, but also to increasingly realize its own productions directly in international markets. To achieve this, around 200 billion yen (approximately 1.13 billion euros) will be invested in the expansion of global development resources over the next five years, which will then form a second main pillar of the business within a decade.

The expansion includes North, Central and South America, Europe, Asia, China, the Middle East, Africa and India. The pre-production of new projects will take place primarily in North America and Europe. The company intends to actively involve regional cultures and artists in the creative process.

As a result, the total number of new IPs will be tripled to 40 – 25 of which will be created outside of Japan. In addition to global expansion, the ambitious ten-year plan includes a variety of other strategic measures:

  • Strengthen key existing IPs worldwide
  • Investment of around 70 billion yen (around 394 million euros) over five years in the development of new productions
  • Investment of around 19 billion yen (approximately 107 million euros) in logistics, e-commerce, shops, facilities and events
  • Establish two to three new studios in Asia within the next five years to support Japanese production
  • Strengthening production capacity with several hundred new hires in key positions in the main studio and international teams
  • Promote new forms of visual expression, including cel-look CG, 3D animation and next-generation technologies (VR, AR, XR, motion capture, AI, game development)
  • CO₂ reduction, more diversity as well as educational cooperation and promotion of sustainable production processes

In addition, Toei Animation wants to put more focus on creative people. Internal project competitions are intended to create numerous new works and give artists the opportunity to experiment with ideas and working methods that deviate from previous production processes.

By 2031, the company wants to achieve a sales volume of 2,000 billion yen (around 11.3 billion euros) and an operating profit of 500 billion yen – with an increase in the international share of sales to 60%.
