The popular US streaming service HBO Max is launching in Germany in just a few weeks and could also become a serious competitor to Netflix, Prime Video and other providers in the anime sector.
Exclusive anime titles
With over 62 million subscribers, HBO Max is only the third largest VoD service in the USA in terms of numbers (behind Netflix and Prime Video), but its exclusive titles from parent company Warner Bros. Discovery make it unmissable for many series and film fans. The provider has over 125 million subscribers worldwide.
However, this number is likely to continue to rise soon, as the planned launch in Germany will take place in January 2026, much earlier than expected.
In addition to current successful series such as “The Last of Us” or “House of the Dragon” as well as eagerly anticipated projects such as the series remake of “Harry Potter” and the “Game of Thrones” prequel “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, anime series and films are also likely to play a role in the German catalog.
HBO Max has already secured several exclusive titles in the USA or has even been directly involved in their production – including “Rick and Morty: The Anime”, “Housing Complex C”, “Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror”, “FLCL: Grunge & Shoegaze”, “Ninja Kamui” and “Suicide Squad Isekai”. An agreement was also recently concluded with the distribution company GKIDS, which specializes in anime films.
It is not yet known how much an HBO Max subscription will cost in this country. However, a comparison with Belgium, where the service is already available, gives a first indication: there the monthly price for the subscription with advertising is 5.99 euros, while the standard subscription costs 9.99 euros and the premium version costs 13.99 euros.
