GTA 6: towards a single-player campaign with an ambitious story mode?

One would have thought that the priority would be elsewhere. After all, GTA Online continues to bring billions of dollars to Rockstar, and the multiplayer version of GTA V remained at the top for more than ten years. However, it is the single-player mode that is electrifying fans today as GTA 6 approaches.

Scheduled for May 2026, the next episode of the saga has not yet revealed anything about its multiplayer gameplay. And it doesn’t seem to bother anyone. On Reddit, a community poll launched by a fan gathered dozens of testimonials that all point in the same direction: what players want above all is a good story.

“I am amazed by the quality of the story”

Among the most appreciated comments, some users wanted to recall what made the greatness of GTA V. “I’m replaying GTA V’s story mode for the first time in years (probably over 6 years), and it’s the first time on PS5. Honestly, I’m blown away by how beautiful the game is and how good the story is. I’m a little biased, because I rewatched Heat last week and forgot that the game’s story was basically a mix between Heat and Italian Heist. I can’t wait to see what the 6th has in store for us.”

Another, more direct fan observed: “Come on! No one watched the trailers with the online mode in mind first. Both trailers only showed the story mode.” A revealing remark, as it is true that Rockstar has put all its communication efforts on the single player.

Rockstar faces immense expectations

It must be said that the pressure is enormous. After the careful writing of GTA V and its three protagonists, players are waiting for a rise in narrative power. According to the rare elements shared so far, Rockstar seems to want to respond to this request by featuring a new main duo, in a contemporary context tinged with social realism.

Certainly, the online aspect will come back. It is even likely that it will generate even more revenue than ever. But for once, the majority of fans hope that multiplayer will be rolled out after releasethus giving the story mode all the space it deserves. The idea is simple: fully enjoy the story, without external distraction, and judge the game for what it is above all – an open-world narrative work.

Rockstar still has a few months to refine its jewel. But at this stage, one thing is certain: if the studio wants to hit the mark, it will have to focus as much on emotion as on spectacle.
