Another MMO falls through for the license
It was in 2023 that Embracer approached Amazon to develop an MMO Lord of the Ringsalongside their other flagship collaboration concerning the next game tomb Raider. A project entrusted to the team in charge of New Worldwhich has since acquired considerable know-how in the field of MMOs. Two years later, the restructuring of the group changed all plans, and this game also seemed to have been abandoned.
At least that’s what we understand following a message posted on Linkedin by Ashleigh Amrine, who worked as a senior gameplay engineer at Amazon Games until yesterday. Now fired, like many of her now ex-colleagues, she talks about her work on the MMO Lord of the Ringsand the wording suggests that it will not see the light of day :
“ This morning, I’m one of the licensees at Amazon Games, alongside my incredibly talented colleagues on New World and our brand new Lord of the Rings game (which you all would have loved). It’s always hard to see such a strong team go through something like this – I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the most talented, creative, and kind developers I’ve ever met here. »
If we are to believe her CV, Ashleigh Amrine had been working exclusively on this MMO for a few months. And since Amazon Games has announced massive layoffs within the San Diego and Irvine studios, the chances of this project being saved are now quite slim. However, Amazon has not confirmed the cancellation at this time, nor has Embracer.
Remember that another MMO project Lord of the Rings was canceled a few years ago following a dispute between Tencent and Amazon, before Embracer took up this idea.
