The Witcher: when does season 5 come out?

Geralt of Rivia’s last ride becomes clearer. Netflix has confirmed that season 5 of The Witcher will be the last of the series, with Liam Hemsworth still in the lead role. Filming has finished, post-production is underway, and a 2026 release seems inevitable. Here is everything we already know about this highly anticipated final season.

Already marked by the departure of Henry Cavill, the series is preparing to bow out after having explored in depth the universe of Andrzej Sapkowski. For this last burst of episodes, the show is inspired by the novels The Swallow Tower And The Lady of the Lakesuggesting a conclusion rich in revelations and decisive confrontations.

A release planned for 2026, filming completed

Filming for season 5 ended in October 2025, as showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich indicated: “I’m in post-production for a very long time on season 5.” The fact that seasons 4 and 5 were filmed one after the other made it possible to streamline production, while ensuring narrative continuity. Hissrich says, “What filming both seasons back to back allowed us to do was realize that we would be writing Season 5 while we were filming Season 4, and we had the opportunity to say, ‘My God, we made a decision in Season 5. Now we have to readjust some things. We have to start laying the groundwork better.'”

With this pace of production, a release between summer and fall 2026 is now the most likely hypothesis. The full trailer, for its part, should not see the light of day before September 2026.

A faithful adaptation of the latest novels… or almost

Season 5 will pick up where the previous season left off. Geralt, now in the service of Queen Meve, seeks to find Ciri by allying himself with a circle of druids. Ciri, for her part, is held captive by the bounty hunter Leo Bonhart, who decimated his band of Rats. To find Geralt, she will first have to survive her own demons.

Yennefer, for her part, founded the Lodge of Magicians and entrusted it to Triss. His goal? Put an end to Vilgefortz’s machinations.

On the adaptation side, the series plans to integrate the major elements of The Swallow Tower And The Lady of the Lakeincluding the Battle of Stygga Castle and the long-awaited reunion of Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer. However, the liberties already taken in previous seasons suggest that script modifications are to be expected. Vesemir, a key character in the novels, has already paid the price in season 4.

A cast that stays true to itself

The main cast remains unchanged for this final season: Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, Freya Allan as Ciri, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Joey Batey as Dandelion. Laurence Fishburne (Regis), Meng’er Zhang (Milva), Danny Woodburn (Zoltan), Mahesh Jadu (Vilgefortz), Bart Edwards (Emhyr) and Sharlto Copley (Leo Bonhart) will also return.

Some new characters are expected, particularly in connection with Ciri’s prophecy or the narrative arc around Nimue, already begun in season 4.

For Lauren Hissrich, the end of this adventure is as much an achievement as a privilege: “I don’t think many series have the chance to go up to five seasons.” She adds: “I also don’t think many shows have the privilege of knowing in advance when they’re going to end.”

An emotion shared by the actors. Joey Batey (Jaskier) confides: “There are a lot of conflicting emotions. A little relief, a little sadness… Did I cry a little? Honestly, yes.”
