Animal Crossing: New Horizons returns to Switch 2 with a free update

Nintendo is rekindling the hype around Animal Crossing: New Horizons with a double announcement that will delight longtime fans. Scheduled for January 15, 2026, a new edition optimized for the Switch 2 as well as a free update of the original game mark the return to grace of a title long left aside by the Japanese publisher.

This return to the scene is via a version specially designed for the new Nintendo Switch 2 console, accompanied by a patch accessible to former players. This development reactivates one of the brand’s greatest successes, sold more than 48 million copies since its release in March 2020.

An exclusive, enriched and modernized Switch 2 edition

On October 30, 2025, Nintendo confirmed that Animal Crossing: New Horizons — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will offer a series of technical improvements and new exclusive features. According to the official announcement, “with improved resolution, mouse controls via the Joy-Con 2 controller, expanded online play, and other features exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, players can enjoy even more island life in Animal Crossing: New Horizons — Nintendo Switch 2 Edition!”

Pre-orders will open soon, and owners of the original game on Switch will be able to opt for an upgrade pack without having to repurchase the entire title. An initiative which aims to retain the loyalty of the vast community already acquired.

A free update also for early players

This re-release doesn’t leave old players behind. Nintendo states that “In addition, a free Animal Crossing: New Horizons update is available for players on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. This update includes a new resort hotel, additional amiibo features, collaboration items, improvements to online mode and much more.”

While many thought the license had been abandoned since the last significant content five years ago, the Kyoto firm is making an unexpected turnaround. The game, however, remained silent despite its status as the second best seller on the Switch.

A strategic return to revive the community

“We can’t wait for you to discover all the new things on the island on January 15, 2026!” concluded Nintendo in its press release. The date is now marked for millions of players.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons returns at a strategic time. After a lean period in terms of updates, this new content allows Nintendo to once again capitalize on the enthusiasm generated during confinements, while giving new impetus to its new generation of console.
