While fans of the Halo saga are impatiently awaiting the official remake of Halo: Combat Evolvedan independent game has just created a surprise on Steam. It is about Spartan Survivorsa bullet hell type roguelite, completely free and already praised by the community.
Available since October 29, Spartan Survivors presents itself as an unofficial but fully committed spin-off from the Halo universe. And the good news is that it was praised by Halo Studios themselves.
A free game… and officially dubbed
The Bathrobe studio, behind the game, announced its launch with fanfare on social networks: “EXCLUSIVE INFO: Spartan Survivors is officially available on Steam!” Before adding: “The day has finally arrived and you can download it now, for free of course.” But the most surprising thing is that this amateur project received praise from the communications director of Halo Studios. Last June, he said: “I really love seeing the passion you and your team have put into this experience – it’s really fun and we can’t wait to progress in the game and unlock even more content.” An unexpected support which gives precious credibility to this title, often compared to Vampire Survivors in his frenetic approach.
Generous content and real replayability
Under its retro appearance, Spartan Survivors offers impressive depth of play. Players can explore ten different levels, choose from five difficulty levels, wield 21 weapons with 105 evolutions, take advantage of 14 perks and 56 upgrades, and even customize their playstyle via a special mode.
Eight playable characters are offered, each with their own abilities and characteristics. The experience is calibrated for challenge lovers, but remains accessible thanks to its progressive mechanics.
With already more than 10,000 downloads on Itchio even before its release on Steam, and a “very positive” rating since it was put online, the success of Spartan Survivors seems set to last.
While waiting for Halo: Combat Evolved Remake, it’s the ideal game
The timing of the release owes nothing to chance. It arrives a few days after the announcement of the remake of Halo: Combat Evolvedscheduled for 2026. A wait that will be long for fans, but that Spartan Survivors could make it a lot more enjoyable.
Free, quick to learn and validated by the creators of the original franchise, this unofficial spin-off has all the makings of a small phenomenon. So why wait? The download is already available on Steam.
