Red, Blue and Green marked the beginnings of a global phenomenon. Nearly thirty years later, an amateur project brings these classics up to date in a free and modernized version: Pokémon Expedition. Available now on Itch.io, this fangame allows you to relive a complete adventure in the regions of Kanto And Johto, while integrating much more recent mechanics.
The project was highlighted by Pokémon Fangame News on Twitter/X, and it has been getting talked about ever since. Designed as a love letter to games from the Game Boy era, Pokémon Expedition borrows the essence of the first games while adding a healthy dose of new features.
Two regions, 16 badges and surprises at every turn
Where the official games offered eight badges to obtain, Expedition doubles the stake: 16 badges to obtain, divided between the two legendary regions of the license. But that’s not all. The game also includes events inspired by the very first Pokémon movie, just to further tickle fans’ nostalgic nerves.
On the gameplay side, the surprises continue. Despite its retro aesthetic, the game incorporates modern mechanics like Mega Evolutions, Z Abilitiesas well as type adjustments to certain Pokémon to strengthen balance and challenge. The developer promises a much more challenging adventure than that of the original games.
Where to download Pokémon Expedition?
The game is available for free on Itch.iocurrently in version 0.0.3. It’s not yet a finalized product, but feedback is already very positive, and updates are expected in the coming months.
For long-time fans, this is the perfect opportunity to rediscover the excitement of yesteryear in a modernized setting. And for newcomers, this free fangame could well be an entry point as exciting as it is unique into the Pokémon universe.
