Luigi’s Mansion is coming (possibly for free) to Nintendo Switch Online just in time for Halloween

The Nintendo version of the icon of fear returns to the screens. From October 30, 2025, Luigi’s Mansion joins the retro catalog of the “Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics” application, reserved for subscribers to the service Nintendo Switch Online + Additional Pack. This long-awaited return comes at the right time to celebrate Halloween with nostalgia and ghosts.

Released in 2001 for the GameCube, the game featured Luigi, forced to search for Mario in a gloomy mansion populated by mischievous spirits. Equipped with the famous Poltergust 3000 vacuum cleaner and guided by the whimsical Professor K. Tastroff, players will have to track down and capture specters in an atmosphere that is as humorous as it is distressing.

A cult classic finally playable on Switch 2

With this addition, Nintendo officially completes the Luigi’s Mansion trilogy on its latest generation console. The original title, never released on Switch until now, thus joins Luigi’s Mansion 2 HDremastered in 2024, and Luigi’s Mansion 3published in 2019.

This return marks a turning point for fans of the franchise, as it is the first time that the 2001 game has been accessible via the subscription service. In its announcement video, Nintendo specifies that the title will be available from October 30the day before Halloween. The company emphasizes the atmosphere of the game, perfectly suited to this time of year, and recalls that this version will be integrated into the application dedicated to GameCube classics on Switch 2.

The unique universe of Luigi’s Mansion, a mixture of humor, light fear and original mechanics, helped make the game a success upon its release. The title even launched a now essential series, positioning Luigi as a leading figure in the Nintendo universe.

How to play from October 30

To access Luigi’s Mansion, you will need:

  • A Nintendo Switch 2 console
  • Be a subscriber to Nintendo Switch Online + Additional Pack
  • Download the app Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classicswhich brings together retro games from the GameCube catalog

That’s not all: with this update, all the main games in the series become accessible on the same platform. A way for Nintendo to celebrate the continuity of a cult saga, while promoting its premium subscription offer.

The publisher indicates that the title will be playable in the original version, with the improvements provided by the integrated GameCube emulator, particularly in terms of graphics rendering and stability. No remake or gameplay update is planned: this is a faithful reissue of the original game, as it was presented in 2001.

A harbinger of a Luigi’s Mansion 4?

This return also raises a question that many fans are asking: is Nintendo preparing a new part of the series? Officially, nothing has been announced. But several observers see in this reissue a desire to test public interest before relaunching the franchise.

The reception to Luigi’s Mansion 3 had already been excellent in 2019, with more than 12 million copies sold worldwide. The reissue of the second opus in 2024 on Switch also found its audience.

The arrival of the first game on Switch 2 could thus prepare the ground for a possible announcement. As Halloween approaches, theories are rife in the community.
