Horizon Zero Dawn: the live-action film reveals its release date

The future of Aloy’s post-apocalyptic world won’t just be written with a controller in hand. While fans are waiting for Horizon Zero Dawn 3, Sony has just announced that the live-action cinema adaptation of the cult game is progressing faster than expected. The script is finished, the project is entering the active phase, and the film is aiming for filming in 2026, for release on the big screen the following year. News that propels Aloy onto the list of the next iconic heroines of action cinema, alongside Lara Croft, Ellie and Zelda.

A production in progress with Columbia Pictures

The project is led by PlayStation Productionsin collaboration with Columbia Picturesalready associated with the adaptations of Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023). It is Asad Qizilbashboss of PlayStation Productions, who confirmed the progress of production in recently revealed legal documents: “We are developing a film based on Horizon in partnership with Columbia Pictures. We already have a working script and are actively looking for a director, with the aim of shooting the film in 2026 and releasing it in 2027.”

At this point, no names have been announced to play Aloythe emblematic heroine of the saga. A major casting challenge, as the character has become cult since the launch of the first game in 2017.

A franchise already ready for the big screen

With two critically acclaimed games and millions of fans around the world, Horizon Zero Dawn already has all the ingredients of a great cinematic fresco: a spectacular post-apocalyptic universe, formidable animal machines, a strong and nuanced heroine, and a central mystery about humanity and technology.

In the games, Aloy is voiced by Ashley Burchwhose vocal performance largely helped shape the character’s personality. It remains to be seen whether this striking incarnation will influence the choice of actress in the film.

A legal battle and a major competitor in 2027

The production of the film also takes place in a tense context. Sony is currently in a legal dispute with Tencent, accused of copying Horizon with its game Light of Motiramdescribed as a “servile clone” by the Japanese firm. This affair could strengthen Sony’s desire to promote its intellectual property in other formats.

Another challenge on the horizon: The Legend of Zelda moviealso expected in 2027. The confrontation promises to be tough between two video game juggernauts, brought to the screen the same year. But this is not the first time that Horizon finds itself facing a giant: its launch in 2022 had already crossed that ofElden Ringwithout hampering its success.
