Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 gets a free update with new boss fights

Five million copies sold, a shower of praise and now a free update on the way: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 continues to surprise.

An RPG hailed as one of the contenders for the title of Game of the Year 2025 has just announced a major free update. Five months after its release, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 reaches a new milestone reaching five million copies sold worldwide. To celebrate this success, the Montpellier studio Sandfall Interactive has decided to offer a gift to players: a completely free DLC, without an official release date for the moment, but scheduled to arrive in the coming months on all platforms.

The game, acclaimed for its captivating artistic direction and its spectacularly staged turn-based combat system, continues its rise with additional content that promises to appeal to new and old players alike.

A generous update that promises great challenges

Sandfall Interactive has lifted the veil on the content of this surprise update, and the additions are numerous. It will include a brand new, never-before-seen playable environment to explore. An area described as visually striking, which will bring its share of enemies and mysteries. The studio specifies: “This not only means a beautiful new area to explore, but also new enemies to fight and surprises to discover.”

But that’s not all: the most experienced players will be able to tackle a series of tough bosses designed for the end of the game. Good news for those who have already completed the main adventure and want to extend the experience. “It will also add tough bosses for players at the end of the game, allowing them to test their skills,” says the developer.

Another notable addition: new character customization options, something highly requested by the community since the game’s launch. “This major update also includes new character customizations,” Sandfall said.

Finally, several new languages will be integrated into the game’s user interface and texts, including Czech, Ukrainian, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, as well as Latin American Spanish.

An unexpected bonus that respects the original work

If some players feared that this free update would alter the carefully looped narrative of the game, Sandfall wanted to reassure: it is designed as independent bonus content, which will not interfere with the multiple endings already offered in the current version.

This transparency has not stopped the community from actively speculating about the surprises that the additional content might hold. Some fans even asked for this expansion to be sold to thank the studio for its work: “Some even begged Sandfall Interactive to charge for it to show their appreciation.”

It must be said that this approach is part of an increasingly rare trend in the industry, where free DLC is discreet in the face of the proliferation of paid content planned well before the release of the games.

Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 therefore joins the short list of recent titles to have enriched their post-launch content for free, alongside games like Vampire Survivors, Powerwash Simulator or even Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.
