Months of fine work: WIT Studio perfected Oda’s style for “One Piece” remake

The streaming service Netflix recently published new details about the upcoming “One Piece” remake and revealed how hard the team is working to implement Eiichiro Oda’s original style as faithfully as possible. We summarize.

Intensive work on Oda’s drawing style

After Netflix confirmed the start of the anime remake “The One Piece” for February 2027 a few weeks ago, character designer and chief animation director Kyoji Asano spoke about the extensive preparation for the production.

WIT Studio analyzed Eiichiro Oda’s drawings intensively over several months and re-drew them again and again in order to be able to implement the style of the “One Piece” creator as faithfully as possible to the original.

It was only after around two months that a level of quality was reached with which director Masashi Koizuka (“Attack on Titan”) was completely satisfied.

The production team previously emphasized that it should not be a pure copy of the original. Instead, they want to retell the story using modern animation techniques and their own interpretation.

Faster implementation planned

The remake is intended to adapt the plot much more quickly than Toei Animation’s ongoing TV series, which now consists of 1,163 episodes. The seven-part first season covers the first 50 manga chapters in 300 minutes.

WIT Studio CEO George Wada explained in the past that Eiichiro Oda himself had expressed the wish to give younger viewers an easier introduction to the now very extensive story.

In addition to the anime remake, Netflix is currently working on the third season of the “One Piece” live-action series, which is scheduled to appear in 2027.
