The Japanese media group TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) recently published new business figures for its anime division and reported a high loss despite significantly increased sales. We summarize.
Higher income despite a loss of millions
As can be seen from the current financial report for the past fiscal year (April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026), TBS was able to increase sales of its anime business by 80.8% to around 3.2 billion yen (equivalent to around 17.3 million euros).
Despite this strong growth, the division also recorded a gross loss of around 524 million yen (around 2.8 million euros).
In its report, the company attributed the negative result in particular to the increased production costs of current anime projects, which is why even the strong international revenues of “Dream Animals: The Movie” could not fully compensate for the losses.
TBS continues to expand its anime business
Regardless of the financial setback, TBS continues to consistently expand its anime division, as its subsidiary Sand B recently took over the majority stake in the 3DCG studio Xenotoon, which is scheduled to be merged with the studio Seven Arcs, which already belongs to TBS, in mid-2027.
Sand B is a company founded last year that specializes in the planning, development and production of anime.
In total, the group invested around 30 billion yen (around 162 million euros) to further accelerate the international growth of the anime business.
TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) is one of the largest Japanese broadcasters, involved in the production of anime titles such as “The Quintessential Quintuplets”, “How Not to Summon a Demon Lord”, “Champignon Witch”, “The Water Magician” and “The Ramparts of Ice”, among others.
