The legendary title song “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” from the anime classic “Neon Genesis Evangelion” officially exceeded the 100 million stream mark in Japan a few days ago. We summarize.
Over 100 million streams
While hundreds of millions or even billions of streams are no longer uncommon these days, this is probably not so easy to say for a title that was released in 1995 – especially not on a national level.
But that’s exactly what the legendary “Neon Genesis Evangelion” title song by Yoko Takahashi has now achieved after over 30 years.
According to Oricon, “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” received a total of 507,677 views in the week of March 16 to 22, 2026, bringing the total number of streams to 100,170,514. As already mentioned, the numbers mentioned refer exclusively to Japanese users of music services.
The constant demand in streaming makes it clear how strong the legacy of the mecha series is to this day and what importance the song has in anime culture. Numerous honors over many years attest to his importance – and it can be assumed that he will continue to have an influence in the future.
The 26-part original series “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” which premiered in Japan between October 1995 and March 1996, was released on DVD and Blu-ray in this country by LEONINE Anime. A new anime project is currently in the works.
