Sony acquires Cinemersive Labs, a small team that will help PlayStation visually

A technical takeover of a small entity

With the acquisition of Cinemersive Labs, Sony is seeking to improve its visual capabilities. The British company founded in 2022 would have no more than 10 members and would specialize in virtual reality and augmented reality media. Normally, one would think that Sony is looking to strengthen its VR division and its PS VR2 here, but this acquisition actually has another purpose. The manufacturer instead wants a new team that will be capable of help him to be more up to date on the machine learning and on the search for a better resultwhich is undoubtedly everything relating to technologies like the PSSR of its PS5 Pro:

Following this acquisition, the Cinemersive Labs team will join SIE’s Visual Computing Group (VCG) and contribute to our broader efforts to advance cutting-edge visuals in games. This includes applying machine learning to improve graphics, perfect rendering techniques, and provide gamers with new levels of visual fidelity. »

It is therefore probably not for its VR expertise that the studio was bought, but for what it can bring to Sony in knowledge on improving visual rendering.
