Fifteen years after the release of The Elder Scrolls V: SkyrimSkyrim is preparing to make its official comeback. Not via a surprise remaster, but through The Elder Scrolls OnlineZeniMax’s MMO that continues to explore Tamriel piece by piece.
During a press presentation, the developers detailed the game’s new roadmap from 2026, with a move to free quarterly seasons. Above all, they confirmed that major new content will send players back to Skyrim from the start of 2027, in an area never before seen in TESO.
Skyrim in TESO in 2027: what has Bethesda just announced?
The Elder Scrolls Online has served for more than ten years as a substitute for The Elder Scrolls VIcovering almost all of Tamriel. Kira Ross Schlitt, Jason Barnes and Mike Finnigan presented a preview of the future of the MMO to several media outlets, including GameWatcher. The site reports that the developers were “comfortable enough to tease a return to Skyrim in early 2027 via a new part of the region, never before seen in TESO”.
Concretely, this is a new “excursion zone”, a type of open region designed for endgame, which will notably integrate dynamic blizzards. ZeniMax also warned that environmental changes will appear at the end of 2026 in the cold zones of Tamriel, a teaser in game for the approach to this chapter centered on Skyrim.
For the moment, only Solitude, Windhelm and Rift can be visited in TESO. Large parts of Skyrim are still missing, such as Whiterun, Starry Dawn, Falkreath or the mythical Gorge of the World. Bethesda does not specify which areas will be used, but fans logically hope to see these iconic locations adapted to the MMO format.
2026 seasons of The Elder Scrolls Online: what connection with the return to Skyrim?
In 2026, The Elder Scrolls Online abandons the annual expansion model for seasons of approximately 90 days, the content of which is included for all owners of the base game. Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk starts on April 2, 2026 with the Fargrave Night Market, a PvE event zone where you choose one of the three factions to accumulate rewards, a free house and progress in the Tamriel Tome Battle Pass style, while an optional Challenge Difficulty and numerous comfort improvements, such as respec via the interface, will arrive from June 8.
Subsequent seasons continue with the return of the Thieves’ Guild to Glenumbria, the puzzle-focused Chamber of the Sage, and a new quest for Sheogorath. At the end of the year, the High Seas of Tamriel event, solo dungeons and a new Trial will test mechanics such as naval combat or underwater exploration before the big adventures in Skyrim.
