Steam Machine: Valve confirms imminent release despite hardware problems

Valve continues to work on its next hardware dedicated to PC gaming. The Steam Machine, accompanied by the Steam Frame and a new Steam controller, remains officially scheduled for release in 2026. However, a recent update regarding the launch schedule reveals some uncertainties. The project is not canceled, but the exact release date now seems much less clear.

The Steam Machine was originally scheduled for release in early 2026

When Valve presented the Steam Machine last year, the company announced a launch planned for early 2026. This announcement accompanied the presentation of two other products intended to complete the Steam ecosystem: the Steam Frame and a new Steam Controller.

The Steam Frame is intended to serve in particular as a virtual reality headset aimed at PC gamers, while the new Steam controller aims to improve the computer gaming experience. Shortly after the initial announcement, Valve changed this schedule. The exit target was changed from early 2026 to a broader period, located in the first half of 2026.

Global RAM Crisis Complicates Valve’s Plans

This first adjustment to the schedule is explained by the global crisis affecting several IT components. The shortage of RAM, storage and graphics cards has seriously disrupted the computer hardware market. Prices of many components have increased due to limited stocks. Faced with this situation, Valve preferred to review its ambitions in order to avoid a difficult launch.

Valve still confirms a release for 2026

The latest update on the subject comes from an article published on the Steamworks blog titled “Steamworks Year in Review”. In this message, Valve clearly discusses the difficulties encountered by the company. The company explains in part: “We recently indicated that we were experiencing difficulties with memory and storage shortages, but we will ship all three products this year. Further updates will be communicated once we have finalized our plans.” This statement confirms that the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and new Steam Controller are still expected to be released in 2026. However, Valve is no longer giving a specific time frame for their launch.

A launch that could follow the Steam Deck strategy

It’s possible that Valve will adopt a similar strategy to that used for the Steam Deck when it releases in 2022. At the time, the device was available through a reservation system. Players had to pay a small deposit in order to secure their place in the queue.

This method allowed Valve to manage demand while limiting out-of-stock problems. The Steam Machine could be launched gradually, with successive waves of production. This strategy would allow Valve to adapt to fluctuations in the component market while ensuring a stable supply for players.
