Fans of the Lord of the Rings universe will be able to return to the Shire very soon. Wētā Workshop has confirmed that Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game will be released for Nintendo Switch 2 on March 25, 2026, a date which coincides with Tolkien Reading Day.
The title, already available since last year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch, is now getting a new generation version. And good news for players: a free upgrade will be offered to those who already own the game on the first Nintendo Switch.
A release on March 25 for Tolkien Reading Day
The date of March 25 was not chosen at random. It corresponds to Tolkien Reading Day, an obvious nod to the universe imagined by JRR Tolkien. Tales of the Shire offers a radically different approach to the great epic adventures associated with the saga. Here, no monumental battles or heroic quests, but a simulation of peaceful life in the town of Bywater, in the heart of the Shire. Players take on the role of a hobbit and participate in daily activities such as cooking, decorating their home, gardening and fishing.
A free upgrade to Nintendo Switch 2
One of the most important elements of this announcement concerns the free upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 version. Players who purchased the game on Nintendo Switch will be able to download the version optimized for the new console at no additional cost. This improvement should notably correct the criticisms made during the initial launch. When it was released, the Switch version received a mixed reception. On MetaCritic, it had an average of 59, with a user rating of 3.9.
Contrasting reviews at launch
The game’s reception had divided critics. A review published at the time explained: “Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game does not reinvent the classic formula, despite some promising glimmers of originality.” She also added: “Unfortunately, any promising signs are canceled out by mediocrity and an experience dominated by untapped potential.” And concluded: “Despite these problems, the game has an undeniable charm, but it is difficult to say that it will resonate with the general public.”
A second life for Tales of the Shire in 2026?
With this new release scheduled for March 25, 2026, Tales of the Shire could attract new players and convince those who were disappointed during the initial launch. The visual improvement promised by the Nintendo Switch 2 version will be particularly scrutinized, particularly by players who found the original version technically limited. It remains to be seen whether this new generation edition will allow the title to fully reveal the potential that some considered still untapped.
