The PS5 Pro reaches a new technical milestone. Sony has just confirmed the global deployment of a major graphics update which promises to significantly improve the image quality of compatible games. And if we rely on the first demonstrations carried out with Resident Evil Requiem, the result is spectacular.
At the heart of this development is PSSR, for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Already used on more than 50 PS5 Pro games, this upscaling system based on artificial intelligence is now moving to a new version, presented unofficially as PSSR 2.0. The first comparison images released by Sony show a visible difference.
PS5 Pro and PSSR, a new generation of upscaling
PSSR analyzes images pixel by pixel during upscaling to increase effective resolution while preserving performance. This technology aims to maintain a high refresh rate while improving sharpness and detail. Mark Cerny, lead architect of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, explains: “We have been working hard on a new version of PSSR, which takes a very different approach not only at the neural network level, but also at the overall algorithm level. It also specifies:
“We are happy to announce that Resident Evil Requiem is the first title to use this more advanced PSSR, which helps maintain a high frame rate and image quality.” This new system is based in part on the Project Amethyst partnership between Sony and AMD, whose FSR 4 technology is already known to PC gamers.
Resident Evil Requiem, a striking technical demonstration
The comparisons published by Sony highlight the character of Grace. In the image using the new PSSR, the lines are sharper, the textures finer and the light management more precise. Masaru Ijuin, Senior Manager of Engine Development Support at Capcom, details this approach: “With Resident Evil Requiem, we focused on improving the quality of presentation of the protagonist through an enhanced version of the RE Engine to deepen the player’s immersion in horror.”
He adds: “For example, each strand of hair and beard is represented by a polygon, allowing it to move realistically based on body movements and wind.” “The way the light passes through her hair also changes depending on how the strands overlap. This detailed depiction of texture is one of the many details we especially wanted our fans to see.”
A PS5 Pro system update expected in March
The PSSR update will come with a system software patch to enable the “Improve PSSR Image Quality” option in the console settings. Masaru Ijuin finally specifies: “The improved version of the PSSR allowed us to increase our expressiveness by successfully processing these details and these particularities of texture, which are traditionally difficult to reproduce on a larger scale due to their complexity.” Sony has confirmed that several existing games will also receive an upgrade to this improved version of the PSSR sometime in March 2026.
PS5 Pro, towards a new visual standard?
With this technological development, Sony is strengthening the premium argument of the PS5 Pro. The improvement is not based on raw power alone, but on an advanced algorithmic approach combined with AI.
The first demonstrations suggest a visible gain in sharpness, light management and fineness of textures, particularly on complex elements such as hair or reflective surfaces. The next updates of compatible games will make it possible to measure the real extent of this graphic evolution across the entire PS5 Pro catalog.
