Call of Duty launches Black Ops Royale, a completely free Gulag-free experience

This mode revisits the DNA of Warzone by removing several major mechanics and introducing an ambitious new map: Avalon. One hundred players will compete in a redesigned format.

Black Ops Royale, a Battle Royale without Gulag or predefined equipment

Black Ops Royale takes direct inspiration from Blackout while adopting the modern structure of Warzone. The rules change significantly. The mode offers no predefined equipment, no Gulag, or purchase points. Players will have to infiltrate in a wingsuit, collect resources on the ground, upgrade their weapons and survive against 24 other squads.

In total, 100 players are divided into 25 teams of four. Each game begins with an aerial deployment on Avalon. A visible circle demarcates the playable area, which gradually shrinks. Notably, the initial position of the perimeter varies with each game to encourage full exploration of the map.

Avalon, the new main map of Warzone

Avalon becomes Call of Duty: Warzone’s new large-scale map. It joins Verdansk, the Island of Rebirth and the Hollow of Refuge. Unlike the darker atmosphere of Endgame, Avalon offers a brighter and more dynamic environment. The map combines dense urban areas, complex interior combat, long lines of sight and open spaces favoring rapid turns.

Treyarch has also reduced the amount of water on the map. New sand paths and several bridges have been added in order to improve the fluidity of movement and limit areas that are too restrictive.

A free experience designed to renew Warzone

Black Ops Royale will be available for free in Warzone upon launch. This positioning aims to attract both regular players and those who have left the game.

By removing the Gulag and purchase points, the mode focuses more on direct resource recovery and tactical management. Every mistake could become permanent.

With a launch scheduled for March 12 at 9 p.m. PT, or March 13 at midnight ET, Call of Duty is preparing a major update likely to permanently change the balance of Warzone.

What Black Ops Royale changes for players

The absence of a second chance via the Gulag profoundly modifies the dynamics of the parties. Team coordination and survival become priorities. The format of 100 players divided into 25 teams retains the classic intensity of Battle Royale while imposing more rigorous management of confrontations. With Avalon as the new primary battleground and a completely free-to-play model, Black Ops Royale marks an important step in the evolution of Call of Duty: Warzone.
