Microsoft continues its monthly update rhythm with a new patch deployed on February 25, 2026 on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and certain compatible devices. This version introduces several important developments, including a significant improvement to Xbox Cloud Gaming and adjustments on the PC side.
While the previous January update expanded Xbox app compatibility and improved save synchronization, the February update places more emphasis on image quality, ergonomics and optimization for portable devices.
Xbox Cloud Gaming goes to 1440p on consoles
The main new feature concerns Xbox Cloud Gaming. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can now enjoy streaming up to 1440p with higher video bitrate. The switch from 1080p to 1440p provides a sharper image, particularly visible on QHD compatible televisions and screens. The increased bitrate also reduces compression artifacts, improving smoothness during fast-paced sequences.
This improvement concerns Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X and Xbox One S, as well as the Xbox application on PC, certain browsers and several compatible Smart TVs. Microsoft also indicates that these optimizations aim to strengthen overall responsiveness, even if the quality of the experience remains dependent on the stability of the internet connection.
The Xbox PC application gains in ease of use
On PC, the February update brings more ergonomic adjustments. The Xbox app now introduces navigation sounds when using a controller. These audio signals, enabled by default according to initial tests, can be disabled in the settings if necessary.
The Game Bar also benefits from improvements. It now displays the exact battery percentage in addition to the visual indicator. The Audio widget benefits from a revised interface and improved support for controller navigation. The game library gains sorting and filtering options, including “Handheld Verified” and “Performance Fit” status.
Notable improvements for ROG Xbox Ally
The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X models receive several technical additions. A new shader precompilation indicator now informs players if graphics shaders have been preloaded. This feature aims to reduce stuttering when first launching a game.
Formatting removable media, including microSD cards, can now be done directly from the Xbox app when installing a game, simplifying storage management. Additional adjustments include key layout, power management, and system stability, including improved modern standby behavior.
An update focused on continuous optimization
Microsoft’s strategy seems clear: gradually refine the Xbox ecosystem rather than disrupt its architecture. Having expanded Cloud Gaming to more devices in 2025, the priority now is to improve the quality and consistency of the experience. With 1440p streaming, more comprehensive PC tools and optimizations for portable consoles, the February 2026 update confirms this approach.
