Action before Isekai: These are the top anime genres in Japan in 2026

A recent audience behavior survey has identified the most popular anime genres in Japan. We summarize the details below.

Most popular genres

The study of fans’ anime viewing habits in Japan, conducted by market research platform Ouchi Cinema, found that action/fighting is currently the most popular anime genre with 59% of the vote. “Fantasy” (54.7%) and “Slice of Life” (37.7%) complete the podium.

The remaining places in the top 10 are followed by “Comedy” with 28.7%, “Dark Fantasy” with 27.3%, “Sport” with 27.3%, “Mystery” with 26.7%, “Romance” or “RomCom” with 25.3%, “Isekai” with 23.3% and “School” with 21.0%.

In addition to the rather poor ranking of the otherwise popular “Isekai” category, it is also surprising that several renowned genres such as “Sci-Fi” (19.0%), “Gourmet” (16.3%) and “Horror” (11.3%) did not make it into the top 10 at all.

In addition, the survey showed that 67.7% of participants prefer to watch anime via streaming platforms. Recordings of TV broadcasts follow with 12.3%, while 8.0% use the live broadcast. Physical media such as Blu-rays or DVDs, however, hardly play a role at just 0.3%.

Finally, the most popular anime in winter 2026 were determined, the top 5 of which consist of the sequels to “Freeze” (15.0%), “Jujutsu Kaisen” (13.3%), “Oshi no Ko” (8.3%), “Hell’s Paradise” (6.0%) and “Medalist” (5.0%).
