A birthday can sometimes be celebrated without official fanfare… and with a gift falling from the sky. While Nintendo remains discreet for the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, a free remake made by a fan is already circulating on PC, at a time when the hunt for surprises is in full swing.

The original game was launched on Famicom in Japan on February 21, 1986, and its 40th anniversary falls on February 21, 2026. On the eve of this date, developer jeb_yoshi published on Game Jolt a free reinterpretation of Zelda 1, available on Windows, with changes that deliberately shake up the memory of regulars.

In his description, jeb_yoshi compares the idea to modifications “à la Super Mario Bros Special”, to give an immediate image: we recognize the base, but we must expect to come across new areas, new secrets, and unexpected enemies.

This type of remake is mainly aimed at players already familiar with the original Zelda, those who like to be taken on the wrong foot.
