Without warning, Microsoft begins to deploy the Xbox Mode on Windows 11. Announced at the GDC in March 2026, this new full-screen interface, inspired by Xbox Seriesfinally leaves the typical portable consoles ROG Xbox Ally to arrive on desktop PCs, laptops and tablets.
The objective is clear: to ensure that your machine under Windows 11 behaves like a real home console when you pick up a controller. Dedicated interface, unified library, slight gain in memory performance, integration Xbox Game Pass And Cloud Gaming : this is how it Xbox mode Windows 11 can transform your setup.
Xbox Mode on Windows 11: what is it and what does it look like?
THE Xbox Mode is a shell, that is to say an interface which replaces the classic desktop when you activate it. Windows 11 continues to run underneath with its drivers and launchers, but Explorer and some background services are paused during the game session.
As Xbox explains, it’s “inspired by the Xbox console experience, Xbox Mode offers a clean interface that puts your library and recently played games at your fingertips, while minimizing background distractions.” The home screen copies that of the Xbox Series, with your last launched games, your gaming history and recommendations in the center.
Big interest for the PC: the library is grouped “including the complete catalog of Xbox Game Pass games and games installed from the main PC distribution platforms”. Concretely, your titles Steam, Epic Games Store Or GOG appear in the same place as your Game Pass games, with tabs dedicated to Game Pass, Library, Xbox Cloud Gaming and at the Store.
How Xbox Mode turns your PC into a home console
The interface is designed for controller navigation: directional cross or stick to move, Xbox button to open or exit the mode. Phonandroidwho tested the feature, emphasizes that “Access to the most recent games and game history is well thought out” and that “navigation with the controller is much more practical, without it being to the detriment of the mouse.” Ideal for a PC connected via HDMI to a TV.
Microsoft promises up to 2 GB of RAM freed up by bypassing Explorer and some services. In practice, testing on machines like the MSI Claw or the ROG Xbox Ally rather revolve around 1 to 1.2 GB gained. On a PC with 8 or 16 GB of RAM, this can limit the jolts linked to lack of memory, without magically transforming your FPS.
Small downside noted by the first tests: the Xbox application launches more slowly than before when you activate Xbox Mode, a defect which should be able to be corrected by a future update.
Xbox Mode Windows 11: who has access to it and how to activate it?
The deployment began on April 30, 2026, in regional waves, with France in the first batch. It takes a Windows 11 up to date (branch 25H2 and following) and the update KB5083631. Enterprise and Education editions are excluded by default.
To maximize your chances of getting it quickly, open the Settings, Windows Update section, then activate the “Receive the latest updates as soon as they are available” option. Check for updates and install the suggested patch. After reboot, the button Xbox Mode appears in the Xbox app and in the Xbox Game Bar (Win+G shortcut).
All that remains is to pair an Xbox or compatible controller, launch Xbox Mode and enjoy a PC which, for the duration of a session, behaves like a home console. If the option is not yet visible, don’t panic: the deployment of the Xbox mode Windows 11 is done over several weeks.
