The Witcher is back with a completely different new game, scheduled for release in a few hours

Ten years after the triumph of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the universe imagined by Andrzej Sapkowski continues to expand. While The Witcher 4 is currently in development at CD Projekt RED, an unexpected new chapter is about to see the light of day on February 25.

It is neither a massive DLC nor an ambitious remake, but an original spin-off called Reigns: The Witcher, developed by the Nerial studio. Available on Steam, this project adopts a radically different formula from the open-world RPG that made the franchise famous.

An unexpected return to the universe of The Witcher

Reigns: The Witcher is set in the universe established by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but abandons the traditional action-RPG formula for an interactive 2D narrative format. The player embodies Geralt of Rivia in a series of stories set to music by Jaskier’s ballads. The principle is based on a simple but effective system: “swipe right, swipe left, seek glory, find death!” » Each decision influences the course of the story, generating thousands of possible combinations.

Familiar faces and new stories

  • Tris
  • Yennefer
  • Ciri
  • Vesemir
  • The Bloody Baron
  • Daisy the Cow

Players will also encounter a multitude of NPCs ready to give new missions. Each part is constructed differently depending on the choices made, offering significant replayability despite a more compact format.

A more accessible approach than The Witcher 3

With its colorful 2D graphics and minimalist interface, Reigns: The Witcher is also aimed at new players. Where The Witcher 3 offered a dense and intimidating open world, this new game offers a lighter entry point into the CD Projekt RED universe. The simplified mechanics do not prevent narrative depth. Decisions can lead to glory or a brutal end.

A spin-off while waiting for The Witcher 4

The release of Reigns: The Witcher comes in a particular context. The Witcher 3 recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, and The Witcher 4 continues in development. Rumors also point to a potential third DLC for The Witcher 3, without official confirmation at this stage. In the meantime, this new project by Nerial allows fans to dive back into the world of Geralt from a new angle starting February 25 on Steam.
