After four seasons of dynamiting the superheroic myth, The Boys comes to an end on Prime Video. Season 5, final round of the duel between Billy Butcher And the Protectorshould reassure fans still marked by the failed endings of Game of Thrones Or Lost.
The first international and French reviews have just been released, and the trend is clear: critics are already talking about a critical “hit”, some going so far as to promise “a masterful finale” for The Boys. But not everyone is completely convinced.
The Boys season 5: can the final season on Prime Video avoid the fiasco of the big finales?
Developed by Eric Kripke, this season 5 has eight episodes, broadcast from April 8, 2026 on Prime Video with two chapters at launch, then one episode every Wednesday until May 20. This is the announced conclusion of the Butcher – Protector confrontation, at the heart of the series since the beginning.
In this final arc, the world now belongs to Protectivewho has become the unofficial leader of the United States, while Hughie, La Crème and Frenchie are locked up in “Freedom Camps”. Annie organizes the resistance, and the return of Butcher with an anti-Super virus promises a particularly explosive last stand.
The Boys season 5: first opinions which promise a masterful finale for the Protector and Butcher
According to Gameblog, The Boys season 5 already has 96% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes for 27 reviews, and a solid 80 on Metacritic. This is one of the best averages of the series, at the level of season 2, well above a more lukewarmly received season 4.
The American press is enthusiastic: Geek Vibes Nation writes that “The Boys remains a visceral and joyfully grotesque adventure, driven by exceptional performances, sharp satire and dark, disturbing humor.” For Nerdspin, after so many “dull finales”, The Boys offers “A masterful finale that remains true to its brutal DNA”.
The Boys season 5: burning political satire, critics’ reservations, should you believe it?
On the French side, The Digitalswho saw the first three episodes, speaks of a season that is always “smart, violent, irreverent, corrosive”, with a “frantic” pace. The site insists on political satire that is “more relevant than ever”: in 2026, two years after the re-election of Donald Trump, the Protector runs the United States like an autocrat and sends his opponents to camp.
Not everything is perfect though. Next Best Picture judges that the series “finally lost its momentum”, when IGN mentions a season which “sometimes lacks a little precision” and does not give all the characters “the attention they deserve”. But these reservations remain in the minority in the face of the very positive consensus which already surrounds this announced end.
