Steam: this free game mixes Resident Evil, Far Cry and cosmic horror, test it now

Since its release online as a free demo on Steam, The Path Into The Abyss continues to be talked about. Developed by the studio MXR ProductionsThis open world survival shooter offers an experience as disconcerting as it is visceral, in a setting rarely seen in the genre: a devastated version of Buenos Airesplunged into chaos after a mysterious alien invasion.

Halfway between resident Evil for the atmosphere, and Far Cry for the first-person gameplay and crafting, the title is already attracting players, who note it 9/10 on multiple platforms. And that’s just the demo.

Argentina ravaged by alien invasion

The game’s story takes place in the near future, where an entity from elsewhere has transformed the climate and submerged the Argentine capital. The universe, bathed in ruins, mist and supernatural anomalies, is clearly inspired by the stories ofcosmic horror.

In the words of the developers: “After the arrival of extraterrestrial beings, the city of Buenos Aires and its surrounding areas were invaded by a flood and a climate change that transformed it forever.”

Faced with the invasion, territorial conflicts broke out between nations, making the remaining areas completely hostile. The studio summarizes this tension as follows: “Several nations competed for control of territories, creating an environment so hostile that it led to the mass evacuation of Buenos Aires.”

Free, dangerous… and intelligent gameplay

The Path Into The Abyss put on a total immersion. You freely explore the city and its surroundings, manage your resources, manufacture your weapons and objects via a crafting system scalable. But the real innovation is the artificial intelligence of the non-player characters: “The characters remember all their interactions with you and the events of their day.”

Result: each encounter can evolve differently depending on your behavior, your reputation or even your past actions. A mechanic that promises high replayability, especially in a world where nothing guarantees your survival.

A promising demo, but no date yet

The complete game does not yet have a release datebut the playable demo already allows you to get a very clear idea of the universe, the gameplay and the potential. It is available for free on Steam, with no time limit.

With its unique atmosphere, its unapologetic inspirations and its original setting, The Path Into The Abyss has all the cards in hand to become a cult title in the independent genre. Any advice? Try the demo now, before word of mouth makes it a must-have.
