Silent Hill is finally available on PC thanks to a free port already playable

Long stuck on the first PlayStation, the very first silent Hill finally opens up to PC players. Twenty-five years after its release in 1999, the cult survival horror from Konami now runs natively on computer thanks to a port created by fans, without going through classic emulation.

While the game remains legally unavailable on PC, despite strong demand symbolized by its presence in the Dreamlist of GOG.comTHE Silent Hill 1 Decompilation Project has just reached a decisive milestone. With a completion rate displayed at 99.88%, it already allows a first playable port of Silent Hill (1999) on PC. Here is what this free fan port actually offers.

Silent Hill 1 finally playable on PC: why is this port historic?

So far, the only solution to launch Silent Hill 1 on PC went through PlayStation emulators like DuckStation Or ePSXewith all the compromises that this implies: sometimes obscure settings, graphic or audio bugs, variable latency. Contrary to Silent Hill 2 or 3, there never was an official Windows port.

THE Silent Hill 1 Decompilation Projecttracked publicly on sites like decomp.devconsists of analyzing the PS1 code to transform it into readable code, then recompiling the game into a PC executable. The same approach has already enabled very strong ports, like Ship of Harkinian for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

What is this first free PC port of Silent Hill 1 worth in practice?

A video published by the YouTube channel Video Game Esoterica shows this PC port in action. We see there silent Hill run at a much higher resolution than on PS1, with a significantly smoother framerate, making the foggy city look much cleaner on modern screens.

The version, however, remains very provisional. Some effects are broken: the famous intro scene where Cheryl runs away currently displays a black silhouette in place of the character, and the camera behaves badly in several places, to the point of sometimes hindering the gameplay. We are clearly talking about a playable proof of concept, not yet a definitive edition like Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition on PC.

The major difference with emulation is that volunteer developers can directly modify the game code. This opens the door to targeted fixes, to own support for Windows 10 and 11, or even eventually to dedicated mods like we already see on other famous decompilations.

Silent Hill 1 on PC: how to enjoy it, and what is Konami preparing for the sequel?

The port itself is distributed free as a fan build, but it generally assumes that you own a legal copy of Silent Hill 1 to stay on track. Creators generally link to their project documentation rather than game files, and do not provide ready-made disk images.

For now, this port is mainly aimed at curious players and preservation enthusiasts who accept a few bugs to enjoy a silent Hill native on PC. Others can still rely on emulation, while waiting for decompilation to reach 100% and the first truly stable versions to arrive.

In parallel, Bloober Team working on an official remake of Silent Hill 1after releasing the remake of Silent Hill 2 on PC and PS5 in 2024. Between this future remake and this already playable fan port, the license finally seems ready to emerge permanently from limbo, both for nostalgic fans and for newcomers to PC.
