Red Dead Redemption: Xbox refunds arrive without warning, are you affected?

Originally released in 2010, Red Dead Redemption continues to surprise players more than 15 years later. This time, it’s Xbox users who benefit, thanks to an unexpected decision from Microsoft: some are being refunded for their purchase of the game, without having to claim it.

The announcement took part of the community by surprise. While the version optimized for Xbox Series Microsoft therefore launched a wave of automatic refunds.

A new version released on Xbox at the end of 2025

Red Dead Redemption returned to modern consoles in 2023, first on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The port then extended to PC in 2024, before landing on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 in December 2025. The game benefits from better fluidity and optimized resolution.

PlayStation 4 players were treated to a free upgrade to PS5. On Microsoft’s side, the same advantage was promised for users of the Xbox 360 version. However, for a time, this was not the case: some had to pay for the game again, believing that the game was not free.

Automatic reimbursements in progress

Testimonials are multiplying on Reddit. Several users explain that they received a refund notification without even having requested it. “I received a message from Xbox today telling me that my purchase of the Series

“So for anyone trying to get a refund for an accidental purchase before the freebie, you’re going to get your money back! I know some people have already gotten refunds by requesting one, but it looks like refunds are now automatic.” “Just got the message. £10 in my Microsoft account, £14.99 in my PayPal account,” says another player, while a third adds: “Woke up to the same thing. But nothing in my bank account yet.”

The debate over physical versions resurfaces

Reimbursement is not everything. Some players still regret the absence of a physical version of the game on Xbox Series X/S, unlike the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. “I really wish you could get it in physical version. Fortunately you were reimbursed,” confides an Internet user. This lack of boxed edition remains a point of frustration for part of the community, attached to the physical medium.

How to know if you are affected

All players who purchased the Xbox Series X/S version of Red Dead Redemption before it was made available for free are potentially affected by this refund. If you haven’t received it yet, keep an eye on your Xbox notifications, Microsoft account, or PayPal. Microsoft has not yet officially communicated, but everything suggests that reimbursements will continue in the days to come.
