Red Dead Redemption 2: Rockstar formalizes one of players’ biggest expectations

It took time, a lot of time, before Red Dead Redemption 2 was talked about again. Released in 2018, Rockstar Games’ game marked an entire generation, but its online mode, Red Dead Online, seemed to have been left aside for a long time.

In March 2026, against all expectations, Rockstar is offering new free content in Red Dead Online. A series of bonuses and rewards will energize the experience, even as eyes remain on Grand Theft Auto VI, expected next November.

Red Dead Online, a free event with new rewards

This return involves the series of quests linked to alcohol smuggling, already known to players. This time, Rockstar is banking on an incentive formula with multiplied rewards and exclusive items.

Throughout the duration of the event, players can benefit from triple rewards, whether in RDO$ or experience points. Each successful mission unlocks cosmetic content, increasing interest in these activities.

For example, a successful sale allows you to obtain the green Torbay vest, while players reaching level 20 collect the brown Ortega vest. Other items, such as the white Cossack hat, are accessible by participating in specific missions related to destroying dams.

Weekly rewards to boost engagement

Rockstar doesn’t stop there and offers a precise schedule of weekly rewards to encourage players to come back regularly. Between March 3 and 30, several challenges allow you to unlock exclusive items such as the beige Porter jacket, the black Salter shoes or even a special emote. This system clearly aims to recreate a gaming routine in an online mode that had lost the habit of it. This type of event, although one-off, brings a little life back to a world long considered abandoned by its community.

A community still frustrated despite efforts

Despite this initiative, the reception remains mixed. Many players consider these additions to come too late, after years without a real major update. On social networks, reactions show persistent impatience. One player summed up the feeling by writing: “It’s been almost eight years.” He continues with a blunt message: “Release a 60 frames per second patch for RDR2 on PS5. Is it that complicated? I love you and I love your games, but still!”. Another comment points to a broader problem at Rockstar: “No significant updates for RDR2, no news of GTA 6.”

Rockstar between GTA 6 and the future of Red Dead Redemption 2

The situation is largely explained by Rockstar’s priorities. The studio is currently focusing its resources on Grand Theft Auto VI, which is scheduled for release in November. This strategic choice leaves little room for ambitious updates for Red Dead Online. However, the initial success of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the attachment of players to its universe continue to weigh. This new free event then appears as a discreet signal, without fully reassuring a community which still hopes for a more ambitious return of the license.
