Rumors around the PlayStation 6 are intensifying. After several reports suggesting a possible delay linked to the increase in the cost of components, a new statement has tempered these concerns. According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, a recognized figure in hardware analysis on YouTube, Sony’s new generation console would still aim for a release at the end of 2027, with a possible slippage limited to the very beginning of 2028.
Rumors of postponement fueled by rising costs
The origin of the speculation comes from a Bloomberg report, which suggested that the increase in the price of RAM and other components could push back the release of the PS6 to 2028 or 2029. The MST Financial firm also mentioned a prolonged life cycle for the PlayStation 5, which would mechanically delay the arrival of its replacement. In a context where technological production costs remain volatile, these hypotheses have quickly gained credibility. But Moore’s Law Is Dead doesn’t buy it.
“A delay to 2029 is unlikely”
In a recent video, the analyst explains: “I think I’ve clearly stated why I believe that the PS6 will most likely be released in 2027, or even early 2028. I don’t believe it will be pushed back to 2029.”
He continues: “When we talk about the price of RAM, we often forget the overall development cost of a console. For the APU alone, Sony pays tens of millions of dollars to AMD; Paying extra for RAM, especially for the first six months of the console’s life, doesn’t justify a delay. They have contracts with AMD and TSMC. »
The Amethyst project and the AMD collaboration
Even if Sony has still not officially announced the PS6, several elements confirm that a successor is in preparation. The Japanese firm has formalized its collaboration with AMD as part of the “Amethyst project”, presented in particular by Mark Cerny, principal architect of the PS5, and Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager of AMD’s Computing and Graphics group. This collaboration aims to develop the next generation of console architecture, with several technical advances already mentioned:
- universal compression
- advanced energy optimization
- developments in ray tracing
- new upscaling methods
This work indicates that the research and development phase is already very advanced.
Production from mid-2027?
Moore’s Law Is Dead already claimed last year that mass production could begin in mid-2027. If this schedule is respected, a release at the end of 2027 seems consistent with Sony’s historical cycles:
- PS3 → 2006
- PS4 → 2013
- PS5 → 2020
Each generation spanned approximately seven years. The PS5 having been launched in November 2020, a PS6 release at the end of 2027 corresponds perfectly to this industrial logic. If the increase in costs can influence the final sale price, it does not seem sufficient to completely disrupt the schedule. At this stage, no official delays have been confirmed. But if the insider is telling the truth, the PS6 remains well timed for 2027. One thing is certain: the next generation war has already started behind the scenes.
