PS5 Pro: Sony prepares a PSSR 2.0 update to transform the visual experience and double the FPS

Sony is reportedly preparing a sizable system update for the PS5 Pro, centered around its PSSR upscaling technology. Called “PSSR 2.0”, this new version aims to improve the image quality as well as the overall performance of the console, according to a report from insider GUST_fan on X (formerly Twitter).

PSSR technology, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, relies on deep learning to provide sharper images, without overloading the graphics processor. It already offers a great alternative for games that struggle to maintain 4K at 60 FPS. With version 2.0, the improvements might exceed expectations.

From 70 FPS to 120 FPS?

According to the information shared, some games currently limited to 70 or 80 frames per second could soon reach 120 FPS. This increase in power would concern not only the new titles, but also the retro games offered in the PlayStation Plus Premium offer. So PS1, PS2 or PSP games could be automatically upscaled to a higher resolution.

The arrival of such technology could strengthen the position of the PS5 Pro in an ever more demanding market. Criticized at launch for its high price ($699 / £699), the console nevertheless proved its value with its 2 TB of storage, advanced ray tracing, and a GPU 45% faster than the standard PS5.

With PSSR 2.0, Sony would respond to a strong demand from gamers: to benefit from spectacular visuals while maintaining fluid gameplay. An essential combination, especially as we approach major releases planned for 2026.

Between rumors and reality: what should we expect?

For the moment, Sony has not yet made this update official. But if GUST_fan’s information proves accurate, the deployment of PSSR 2.0 would be planned between January and March 2026. It remains to be seen whether all the announced features will be there.

In any case, this development represents a notable advance in the software optimization of new generation consoles. If you own a PS5 Pro, get ready: your console could soon change dimensions.
