PS5 Pro: Sony deploys a major update that boosts the graphics of your games, Resident Evil 9 benefits from it

The PS5 Pro is preparing to reach a technical milestone. Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that the enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution update, better known as PSSR, will be rolling out in the coming weeks. Resident Evil Requiem, released today on PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S, becomes the first title to use this new version.

The announcement was published on the PlayStation Blog, where Sony specifies that this technological development comes from Project Amethyst, a collaboration with AMD. The stated objective: to improve image quality while maintaining optimal performance.

A new version of the PSSR from Project Amethyst

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution is Sony’s proprietary technology dedicated to image improvement on PS5 Pro. With this new version, the manufacturer claims to have thoroughly reviewed its technical approach.

In its press release, Sony explains: “We have been working hard on a new version of PSSR, which takes a radically different approach, both in terms of the neural network and the overall algorithm. We’re happy to announce that Resident Evil Requiem, available today, is the first title to use this enhanced version of PSSR, helping to maintain optimal frame rates and image quality. »

This change would affect both the neural network used for image processing and the general scaling algorithm.

Resident Evil Requiem, first improved PSSR compatible game

Resident Evil Requiem ushers in this improved technology upon launch. Capcom’s game thus serves as a technical showcase for the PS5 Pro. Available since today on PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S, the title immediately benefits from the new PSSR on the Sony console. According to the information provided, this update aims to maintain a balance between high frame rate and increased sharpness. The technology would therefore make it possible to optimize the resolution without compromising fluidity.

A PS5 Pro system update deployed simultaneously

Sony also clarified that a PS5 system software update will accompany the rollout of the new PSSR. PS5 Pro owners will see a specific option appear in the settings. The “Improve PSSR image quality” option will enable the enhanced version on titles already compatible with current technology. This expanded compatibility means that many existing games will potentially benefit from this development without requiring an immediate individual patch.

Sony and AMD strengthen their technological collaboration

Project Amethyst, mentioned by Sony, is the result of a technical collaboration with AMD. This cooperation aims to improve graphics performance through advanced processing solutions. With this announcement, Sony confirms its desire to strengthen the technical argument of the PS5 Pro against the competition. Resident Evil Requiem thus becomes the first concrete example of this new direction.
